Plumbing work caused Oxnard apartment fire

A fire that damaged an Oxnard apartment this morning was started by a plumber using a propane torch, Oxnard Fire Department officials said.

The plumber was using the torch to attach a shower valve onto copper piping in an apartment in the 700 block of West Pleasant Valley Road when insulation in the wall caught fire and flames spread up a wall, said Battalion Chief Gary Sugich of the Oxnard Fire Department.

The fire in the ground floor apartment was reported about 11:46 a.m.

Firefighters found smoke in the apartment and knocked down the flames in about 15 minutes, Sugich said. The effort was complicated because firefighters had to break through the shower to get to the flames, he said.

Several dozen people were evacuated from the apartment complex due to the fire, Sugich said. No one was injured.

Residents of four apartments were expected to be displaced by the incident, said the battalion chief.

An estimate of damage caused by the fire was not immediately available this afternoon.
