160 reasons we love the Mid-Valley: White's Restaurant - Statesman Journal

Day 67

What it is: The oldest restaurant in Salem in its original building.

Why we love it: White's Restaurant is an iconic breakfast and lunch spot, and it reopens this morning after being closed five days for plumbing repairs. Hours are 6 a.m. to 3 p.m. Monday-Saturday and 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. Sundays.

White's offers good food at a reasonable price and even better service. It's the kind of cozy place where a menu item is named after one of its most colorful patrons, Maynard Drawson. "Maynard's Meatloaf" used to be served only on Thursdays, but it got to be so popular that it now is offered every day, for $7.95.

The restaurant was opened in 1936 by Charles and Myrtle White at 1138 Commercial St. SE, where it remains today. The family operated the restaurant until 1995. ? Capi Lynn
