Weather service: Chicago's summer was abnormally wet, hot

The summer of 2011 is in the books as one of the wettest and hottest ever for the Chicago area, according to the National Weather Service.

There were 19.08 total inches of precipitation from June to August, making it the third wettest summer for Chicago since records began being kept in 1871, according to a statement posted on the agency?s website. That total is 7.03 inches above normal.

About 58 percent of that total rainfall ? 11.15 inches ? fell in July, making it the wettest July ever.

Temperature-wise, the summer was above average as well. The average high temperature was 83.4 degrees, 1.4 degrees above normal, and the average low was 64.5 degrees, 2.8 degrees above normal. The average temperature for the season was 74.0 degrees, 2.2 degrees above normal. The averages include every summer from 1981 to 2010.
