DETROIT ? Ozzie Guillen on Sunday restated his love for the White Sox and Chicago. He made it very clear his family feels the same way and they all hope he is managing the team in 2012.
And if it means having to go forward without some of his coaching staff? What if chairman Jerry Reinsdorf, who has Guillen under contract for next season but not his coaches, suggests a change in the coaching ranks?
?I?d say, ?Wow, we got to talk about it,? ?? Guillen said before the Sox finished a three-game series by getting swept out of Detroit on Sunday night. ?Because I feel comfortable with our coaching staff. Coaches don?t win games. They help players, but they don?t win games. Maybe the third-base coach, send somebody to the plate or stop somebody. But everybody else ? I got the greatest coaches for me. I?ve got very good coaches.??
And if Reinsdorf and/or general manager Ken Williams disagree?
?OK, tell me who?s out, then I?ll make my decision,? Guillen said. ?I don?t know why people think I?m very tough, very demanding. I?m a manager who says give me the lineup and play. People have the wrong image of me.??
Most of the coaching staff has been walking on eggshells in recent weeks. On Friday, it was learned that Williams challenged hitting coach Greg Walker about his work with Gordon Beckham, an encounter that escalated into a shouting match and Williams telling Walker to clean out his locker. Reinsdorf intervened on Walker?s behalf.
With Guillen saying last week he?d like an extension on his contract that runs through next season and the Florida Marlins keeping a seat open for him in Miami, the ongoing Kenny-Ozzie soap opera became public again and raised the volume on the debate over whether Reinsdorf should choose one over the other. Much of the coaches? job security rests with Guillen?s.
?This is a business,?? Guillen said. ?People have to be treated like a business. Whatever decision they make, I?ll be happy. I hope they make the one I like. To stay here. I?m not going to deny that. But if they don?t, they don?t.
?To be honest, I don?t know why people think I want to leave.
?I don?t want to leave,?? he said, his voice rising. ?Why? Jerry Reinsdorf gave me an opportunity to play in the big leagues and manage in the big leagues. No, I don?t want to leave. That?s up to them, that?s up to them. I never want to leave. Chicago is the best city in the world. For me, there is nothing better than managing in Chicago.
?I love this organization. Love it, love it, love it. See this Sox logo? I?m part of that. I wish I could be in the Hall of Fame one time, so I could wear this freaking uniform. That?s how much I love this organization.??
On the field, the Sox and Mark Buehrle were pummeled 18-2. Buehrle (11-7), who may be pitching his last season in a Sox uniform, gave up eight runs (7 earned) on 10 hits.
Third baseman Brent Morel made two throwing errors and second baseman Gordon Beckham made one. September call-ups Addison Reed and Shane Lindsay also took their share of lumps after Buehrle had his worst outing of the season.
If the Sox weren?t dead mathematically, they sure looked it in front of an ESPN2 television audience and sellout crowd at Comerica Park.
The Tigers led 16-0 on 22 hits through six innings.
And to think the Sox have Monday?s day-night doubleheader against the Twins in Minneapolis to look forward to.
