The Chicago Teachers Union filed an unfair labor practice complaint against the school district Friday, claiming it "coerced" some teachers into agreeing to work longer hours than called for in their contract.
The complaint, filed with the Illinois Educational Labor Relations Board, is the latest salvo in a three-month fight between the union and Mayor Rahm Emanuel, who controls Chicago Public Schools.
Mr. Emanuel has pushed the union to lengthen the school day?one of the shortest in the nation?by 90 minutes. When negotiations stalled, district officials publicly promised to award teachers a 2% bonus in exchange for the longer day. The union rejected it, but teachers at four schools approved waivers agreeing to the deal.
The suit alleges that district officials threatened to close schools or lay off teachers if they didn't agree to the deal. Becky Carroll, district spokeswoman, said the suit lacked merit and was ill-advised.
