Mayor Rahm Emanuel talks about his first 100 days in office. (Tribune/Nancy Stone)
The artificial milestone is technically Tuesday, but Emanuel held a news conference a day in advance. He stood next to two super-sized checklists of more than 50 goals he set for himself during his first 100 days as mayor.
?This is a down payment. This is just the beginning. By no means do I call this perfection,? Emanuel said. ?They are incremental steps in each of the areas that are essential for the city?s future.?The mayor said the list helps keep him accountable for the promises he made. It also helps create a way to measure whether he is making progress.
Among his checked-off goals were mapping public spaces and convening a food dessert summit. Emanuel also claimed success when it comes to developing public health goals and creating a plan to reduce foreclosures in Chicago.
Chicago?s 46th mayor already is looking forward to the benchmarks he?s laid out for his first year in office.
?My staff lives in fear of it,? he said. ?It?s an opportunity to remind ourselves what we said we were going to do and what we need to get done to bring about the change.?
